We were told we live in a meritocratic society, but that idea was soon forced out of our conscious thought. Then we said if we are true, good, honest, and hard-working we would reap our just desserts, that too turned into a drought.
We tried to stay positive and said work ethics and morals will prevail, and idea shot to the ground like migrating geese and ducks.
Instead we were offered taxes and mysterious taxes plus surcharges which no auditor or accountant can explain, nay not even the people in the tax department or the customs and excise… We wind up paying for things just as much as a country like Denmark (which has high taxes and V.A.T’s).
We see some people who held high positions building mansions for millions, and we stay silent never asking where did you get this? And how was it done on a government salary.
We see freshly graduated numpty twits who seem to think that just because they got a masters or whatever they are entitled to managerial posts, we come across a 24 year old who holds the title “Senior Art Director” and he is still wet behind the ears.
And people ask why so glum and why so pessimistic? Answer is right in front of you!
When you see the disproportion between a foreigners salary and the locals (knowing full well they get allowances for various things and the Jordanians do not, well, you know what I mean), also add to that the importation of foreigners to do jobs that we have plenty of people qualified to do and also people who have experience to do it (aka Marad il Khawaja). And they wonder why there is a brain -drain going on! Well answer: If you match the salaries of the foreigner (no need for the extras) and if you offer an excellent health plan, then maybe just maybe people would consider staying.
How does one reconcile the fact that tax department can with impunity break laws and go back 7 years when they only have legal right to go back and audit 5 (they actually tried to pull that one on my father, who unfortunately for them never throws out a receipt or a paper. 15 years was the record scam they tried)? And the fact that you are treated like a criminal when you enter a governmental institute? Knowing that you are paying their salaries.
As much as I adore my country, I will not pretend it’s rosy and sparkly, because it is not. We are seeing it every day spoilt brats with a sense of entitlement, idiot children of high ranking officials lording it over others. The discrepancy between rich and poor with an ever widening gulf.
