Sitting around surfing the net doing my usual youtube rounds, I saw some videos made by various celebrities, you have probably seen them, they are the “it gets better”, so let me say this: As much as I like the whole idea of “It gets better”, it doesn’t get better you just become more adept at fighting back and not taking crap. But it doesn’t get better as long as the ignorance and bigotry is out there…
Although the sentiment behind it is sound and the idea is beautiful, and people are reacting to it, what I believe we should be aware of is this:
We must not lie to our youth and to ourselves it is psychologically damaging, we tell ourselves that it gets better, but it does not, like I wrote before you just get more experience at dealing with jerks and deflecting idiots comments and suppressing ignorance, but that does not mean it gets better.
Do not push the idea that it gets better, it is akin to the idea that we all will have happy endings and find that Mr Right and that just does not happen in real life, any perfect relationship or person is a work of fiction and in fiction it should stay, how many lives have been ruin by the perpetuation of that lie.
It will only get better when we learn how to deal with bigotry and ignorance, it will only get better when we learn how to not delude ourselves, because if we do then we get complacent and when we get complacent we get lazy, and then fanatics and bigots will walk all over us.
That is just my 2 cents for now
